Lanny Garth Close, MD

Lanny Garth Close, M.D. is Professor of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He served as the Howard W. Smith Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center from 1994 to 2013.

Dr. Close received his medical degree with honors (AOA) from Baylor College of Medicine in 1972 and trained in general surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by specialty training in Otolaryngology at Baylor College of Medicine affiliated hospitals. He completed fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgery at the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in 1979.

Dr. Close is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed articles, over 25 book chapters and 2 textbooks. He has served as president of several prestigious academic societies, including the Society of University Otolaryngologists and the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology. He served as president of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Medical Board from 1999-2000. He has lectured at over 50 international academic institutions and has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, including The Laryngoscope, Head and Neck, and Cancer. He is a lifetime member of the Johns Hopkins University Society of Scholars and has received both the Presidential Citation and the Vice-Presidential Citation of the Triological Society. Dr. Close has been listed as one of New York City's best doctors for the past 15 years. He is a Professor of Neurology (in the Gertrude H. Sergievsky Center and the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain) at the Columbia University Medical Center.
